So the Race Face Turbine w/ the 169.5 mm spindle is the way to go when your building up this frame. Also tried the Wolftooth 28t cinch chainring , even w/ 2mm less offset it worked as well as the Race Face 28t cinch ring w/ the 45N Dunderbeist.
Started working on this project last week . All the normal build steps were underway and going well; calculate spoke length , build wheels , cut fork steerer and initial sizing check on the bench. Then came the bottom bracket and crank install.This year Salsa is using 100mm bottom bracket shell paired with 197mm rear axle spacing , much like Xprezo did on their fat bike last year.The standard Sram GX 170 spindle fat crank worked fine on the Xprezo concerning chainline and arm clearence. The assumption that this would apply to the Salsa was incorrect. The initial install of the 170 GX did not work, the Race Face Aeffect with the 190 spindle poses its own issues. Attempting to make this work defeats the lower Q factor that the 100mm bb provides. The analysis: don’t try to save a buck on the crankset with this frame. The solution: Race Face Turbine Cinch crankarm set with the 169.5mm/ 30mm spindle and Cinch 30mm bb ( BSA 100mm for this frame ).The Cinch chainring for this application gets flipped to obtain 75mm chainline. This is the set up on the stock Mukluk Carbon XI.
